the ascension
Appeared in the 1999-2004 issue.
this feeling you get
when you read about
rothko's suicide
or dee dee's overdose
this world of young girls
on their hands and knees while
the cameras roll
while the wars are fought
and the soldiers cut off
the feet of the smallest children
this
and the phone ringing
at some point in the afternoon
on easter sunday
your mother
eight hundred miles away
saying she's found your father
saying he doesn't remember
how he got there
a frightened man in
an anonymous hospital room
and what he wants is a drink
and a cigarette
what he wants is to
forget again
what he says is
take me home
