The Games People Play
Appeared in the Fall 2004 issue.
The cherry tomatoes
I’ve picked
from my garden
sit silently
on my counter top in
a broken girdle
a sort of
oblong circle
I clandestinely hinge
my head around
the doorjamb
and watch them
spy on them
leer at them
plot to devour them
sink
my carnivorous teeth
into their
smooth supple skin
suffering them
to death
it’s
the only way
to vindicate
myself
from this
ennui.
