Santa Monica
Appeared in the 1999-2004 issue.
the lady with a dog
she wanders over the broken shells
tinted green or pink on the Boardwalk
swathed in black for sweating
and her stout bulldog is smiling
with an inquisitive smile
soft swell green as any hard umber
the sea soft hard as small
rock hard as any surface
vaporous shifting purple and led
to a far-off shore among the indignities of men
it really makes you appreciate
the beauty of seagulls
the little sandpipers
hie and dap
on spinning little legs
