The Horse Latitudes

Struggling in our wake
it flails the water
to a foamy sepulchre and we will hear
the crazed whickering
long after we have traded breath for life
yet still we cling to the rail in this mirrored space
where only ghosts may graze
offering prayer against prayer we won't be
abandoned here
this close this far apart knowing that before love dies
we must watch it die
