Binary Star

Appeared in the Spring 2004 issue.

(A stellar system consisting of two stars orbiting around a common center of mass and often appearing as a single or telescopic object.)

Separate beds seemed a little extreme
so during hayfever season they slept
top and tail
to prevent their coughing
from disturbing each other

Last night, circling around the bed
settling and re-settling the duvet
tucking in
netting the days events

This morning, waking earlier than usual
he notices she is clasping his ankles together
He kicks free
retaliates by mooring a finger
between her smallest toes

This causes her to sneeze
and he begins to think about
pollen circling,
then atoms
split,
an infinite regression
to a point

What is the point?
she wakes,
he pulls his finger out.
