Choice of Passing
Appeared in the Fall 2004 issue.
If you were an unearthed oak, would you speak to God
with cracking branches, bring Him nearer than leaves
crushed beneath your trunk with interlocked roots?
Ask Him to have night recant its promise
of darkness. With your passing imminent,
a pale baptism could shorten sorrow’s stay.
Or keep the silence of a distant observer.
You have no knees to fall on. Even if you did,
soil hardened by drought would not welcome you back.
